Dr. Luis W. Lu, M.D.

Dr. Lu is double board certified in Ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Eye Surgery. He received his M.D. at C. Heredia University in Lima, Peru. His Surgical internship and initial Surgery Residency was done in Baltimore, Ophthalmology residency at HHC Division of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, fellowship in Oculoplastic Reconstructive Surgery in New York, and a fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at Columbia University. Then he held a teaching appointment at Columbia until his family relocated to Pennsylvania in 1982.

Dr. Lu had further training at several major institutions including Kiryu, Japan with Prof. Momose, Microsurgery Institute of Moscow with Prof. Fyodorov, Wills Eye Hospital, Johns Hopkins, University of Syracuse, and Harvard University.

His specialty deals with Complex Surgeries and diagnostically challenging cases. Dr. Lu examines patients with rheumatologic, toxic, oncologic, metabolic, endocrine, infectious, and other medical diseases. He has the expertise in differentiating these medical conditions from intrinsic ocular diseases that affect the eye and different organs leading to ophthalmological problems.

Dr. Lu holds a Clinical Instructor appointment at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a Preceptorship appointment at Arizona State University, and an Honorary Professorship at the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University School of Medicine. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he was the past president of the Elk-Cameron County Medical Society. Board member of the Arizona Latin American Medical Association, and ALACCSA, he is a Consultant for several departments of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Lu has contributed more than 70 publications in American and foreign literature, and has written Four textbooks and over 25 chapters for books on Ophthalmology. In addition, he has delivered over 500 articles on Clinical Ophthalmology for the Latin American Society of Cataract, Glaucoma and Refractive Surgery, and designed multiple eye instruments. Lu has participated in over 450 presentations in national and international meetings and has been invited by numerous foreign national universities and eye societies as a guest lecturer, and trained over 100 residents and fellows. He has performed demonstrative live surgery in different countries and is a member of multiple national and international societies including the World Eye Foundation. Dr. Lu is a past recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Award, American Medical Association Award, Argentinian Society Award, Colombian Society Award, and Peruvian Society Award for teaching and contribution to medicine.

Listed in the America’s Top Ophthalmologists yearly, and several Who’s Who in medicine, he was an examiner for the American Board of Eye Surgery for years.

Relocated to Arizona at the end of 2014, was a founder of the Eye Consultants of Arizona, in July 2015. His areas of interest includes Complex Clinical and Surgical eye problems, prevention of blinding eye diseases, and research in sutureless eye procedures.

Dr. Lu is married to Laura E. Lu, R.N., ASORN, OMA. They have two children, L. Michael Lu architect , CEO of Nanogram.co; and Andrew Lu an NYU undergrad, and graduating doctor in 2018.
